German police confirmed that a 43-year-old man and two nine-year-old children died in the fire involving a Tesla, while another child managed to escape.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene but were unable to open the car’s electronic doors. The accident happened on Sunday (7) in Shnde, northern Germany.

According to reports from local authorities, the Tesla ran off the road and crashed into a tree. The impact caused a fire in the vehicle. The child who managed to escape was airlifted to the hospital by helicopter.

A man named Roman Jedrzejewski, who works at a nearby paint shop, recounted the moment he heard the accident and rushed to try to help.

“I was here at the paint shop. Like so many Sundays, I do some little things here alone,” he told the local newspaper Ruhr News.

“Suddenly I heard very loud braking noises, tires screeching really loud. And then a bang, it was brutal. I just thought: My God.” He ran toward the Tesla with a fire extinguisher in hand but was unable to put out the flames.

“I wanted to save the people. I tried to open the car, but that didn’t work either. It was already so hot because of the fire, but the right side of the car was still relatively intact,” Jedrzejewski said while crying.

Tesla vehicles can pose a serious risk to drivers if they lose power in an accident. The power loss makes it very difficult, or impossible, for the doors to be opened from the outside.

Even with manual release levers inside Teslas, they can be difficult to locate or use.
